‘You did what!’

‘I love her, why shouldn’t I ask her to marry me.’

‘You can’t marry a scullery maid, what on earth are you thinking. Goodness, Geoffrey, she was a barmaid before coming to us. What would people think if you took her as your wife?’

‘I really don’t care what people think, and nor should you.’

‘Propriety is everything and well you understand this. How many doors to you in London would be closed if you made this alliance?’

‘The only door that matters to me is the door to Faith’s heart.’

‘Don’t be a fool! You know very well that the coffers are virtually empty, how will you care for Driscoll once it is all gone.’

‘I never thought you had such a regard for money, Margaret. Remember, Timothy says that money is the root of all evil.’

‘Don’t misquote to me, Geoffrey! You know very well that it says the love of money is the root of all evil. I am not saying you should love money more than all else. When it is in caring hands it can be used to good. Not only will marrying a wealthy wife bring funds back to us, but with it we can employ people to look after the house and the lands. Where would they be without the jobs that we provide? Would you let the property go to wrack and ruin and have all these people who look to us for a living go hungry? You are lord of the manor and have responsibilities. Your life is not your own to do as you wish.’

Gentleness comes into Margaret’s voice as she crosses the distance between them to lay a delicate touch upon his arm. ‘I would have you happy brother, I would. I admit that this maid has a pretty face, but so do most of the women I invited here this evening to tempt you. Yet they have more than a pretty face, they have wealthy fathers who would happily supply a handsome dowry to ensure a title in return. I am sure if you gave one of them a chance and married her that you would grow to love and appreciate her. Daphnia is a very suitable match for you. I think she’d make you a splendid wife. One you could be proud to have on your arm.’

Geoffrey takes Margaret’s head in his hands and places a kiss on her forehead. ‘Miss Delaney is a lovely lady. I will admit she is both fair of face and has a pleasant manner, but she does not have my heart. Maybe you could find a rich husband and look after Driscoll yourself if it means so much to you? I would be quite happy to have a small holding and work the land myself if it meant that Faith would marry me.’

‘Oh, Geoffrey.’
